LEO satellite impacts on small markets: The Falklands

Incyte Consulting has been assisting the Falkland Islands Communications Regulator on the shaping of the regulatory environment in the Falklands since 2019. Most recently, Incyte has assisted the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) in the negotiation of a compensation agreement with Sure South Atlantic to allow for the introduction of a new VSAT licensing scheme. Incyte provided expert advice, building on our extensive experience with the impact of market entry by low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite providers, particularly in small island states. In the Falklands, Personal VSAT licence applications have now commenced under the new VSAT policy offering more choice for fixed broadband customers. More details on this agreement can be found in the related FIG press release:

The emergence of LEO satellite providers has a profound impact on the telecommunications ecosystem, particularly in markets where the profitable exploitation of terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure is challenging. Incyte is well positioned to advise regulators, policy makers and operators on the regulatory, policy, commercial and technological implications of this paradigm shift.
